چکیده
Carbon nanotubes are a new allotrope of carbon which emerged from the fullerene family [1]. Carbon nanotubes have been discovered by high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) in 1991 by Iijima [2]. A single wall carbon nanotube is constituted of one atomic plane with a graphite-like arrangement of C atoms – called a graphene sheet – which is perfectly rolled into a cylinder (Fig. 1). Typical tube diameters are in the nm range. The multi-wall carbon nanotubes are built from several coaxial layers of graphene cylinders with an interlayer spacing of

Imaging Carbon Nanostructures with SPMs
The unique mechanical and electronic properties of fullerenes, nanotubes, graphene and carbon nanoribbons make them very promising materials for nanotechnological applications. First-principles calculations of forces and currents between a tip and carbon nanostructures show that the rich variety of image patterns found in atomic-scale AFM and STM measurements can be rationalized in terms of the...
متن کاملNanocarbon-scanning probe microscopy synergy: fundamental aspects to nanoscale devices.
Scanning probe techniques scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) have emerged as unique local probes for imaging, manipulation, and modification of surfaces at the nanoscale. Exercising the fabrication of atomic and nansocale devices with desired properties have demanded rapid development of scanning probe based nanolithographies. Dip pen nanolithography (DPN) and...
متن کاملA MEMS device for In Situ TEM/AFM/SEM/STM Testing of Carbon Nanotubes and Nanowires
A MEMS device for in-situ TEM/AFM/SEM/STM testing of nano structures is designed. Two deformation measurement methods are discussed: microscopic measurement and electrical measurement. For the first method, the device consists of a comb-drive actuator, calibration beam and specimen stage. The stiffness of the specimen can be well characterized by comparing the load-displacement relation before ...
متن کاملSTM atomic resolution images of single-wall carbon nanotubes
We have obtained atomically resolved STM images of individual single-wall carbon nanotubes. The interpretation of the apparent lattice is nontrivial. In most cases we observe a triangular arrangement instead of the expected hexagonal carbon lattice. However, the chirality of the nanotubes can be unambiguously determined from the images, which is an important result because the electronic proper...

Using C2H2, 112 and As gases at 550'C, carbon nanotubes were fabricated on the surfaces of twosubstrates coated by nano thin layers of metal catalysts by DC magnetron sputtering. AYStamless steel andFe/CteAl, by thermal chemical vapor deposition (TCVD) The surface properties of the substrates wereparticularly investigated, and the effect of treatment of the substrates on the CNT's growth is cri...
